Appendix III
Index to Innkeepers
Saunders Wm. ‘Head tapster of the Kings Arms’
Henneker James See ‘Early references’, p.3 of my MS. ‘paid for burying a Spaniard, who died in james Hennekers stable, and for wine which he drunk when he was sicke.’
Meakings Sarah is mentioned in Accts. of Poor H., 1688, p. 132: probably the same
Bushell John. Also in Pier Accts, 1678, and in Accts of Poor H. 1680 and 1699.
Pamflett Stephen and his widow. In 1684 Stephen is mentioned by name, and there can be no possible doubt about the inn, for ‘the cripple’ is mentioned. In 1689 we find the widow Pamflett; so Stephen must have died between 1684 and 1689.
Stevens Richard and Ruth. In Poor H, Accts the earliest ref to Richard is 1682. In 1688 his widow comes in and we trace her till 1695.
Laming Roger. The full reference us from Burials. Par. Reg. ‘3 Sept. 1653. Phillipe du Marius of the island of Gersey, Master of the Shipp called the ‘Gift of God’, who died at the house of Roger Laming known by the name or the signe of the Dukes head in Margate.’ The Accts. of the Pier, give a still earlier reference to this inn, 1678. ‘Spent at Roger Lamings’. This is the usual formula, and is plain enough.
Additional Inns from other sources.

No inns mentioned in the 5 loose pages of 1666.
Goodman Pond = Abraham P. town crier and bumbailiff in 1666.
His last mention as an innholder is in 1688, and Widow Pond is found in 1694. In 1701 we have Armanel Pond (a woman, as proved by an entry), so she may be his widow. She does not appear after 1706.
Bushell John. For Ref. 1660-2, see John Lewis 2nd ed pp [90, 91]
Names of Innholders. It will be noticed that in recording the names there are often considerable gaps in point of time. The magic formula ‘spent at . . .’ is just as frequent, but as no name is given the libations are not recorded. As it is, over 140 entries appear here, many names being repeated over and over again.
Stevens Richard. The favourite inn for ‘the Officers’ was unquestionably the Five Bells. A thick block of the same name in these records generally indicates this inn. This name is a case in point, for apart from unrecorded meetings there, 24 are actually entered. We trace Richard Stevens and his widow from 1682 to 1695.
Pamflett widow. Here again there is no element of doubt about the name of the inn, for in 1697 her death is recorded in the Reg. for Briefs, p. 28 ‘Mrs Pamflett at the Queens Arms.’
Hart Paul was an important personage. From the historical Dept. of the General Post Office, London, we learn that he was one of our earliest postmasters, the term ‘deputy’ being used for that office at this period: ‘1691-1709 Paul Hart, Deputy of Margrett.’ Where his inn was is not known. We find him in these Accts in 1685. The inn cannot have been near the Church, as the references are but few. The last reference as an inn is in 1700. There are 3 references in 1715 all of which are payments in relief, the last one being ‘To Paul Hart in need’. His death is not in the Par. Reg., so he must have died elsewhere.
Ovenden widow. We find her in Pier Accts, in 1678. As she occurs there frequently, we are justified in concuding that her house was near the Pier and not near the Church.
Pamflett of the Queens Arms He was evidently a man of some position, as he is generally called Mr Stephen Pamflett. In the same way, his widow is called Mrs Pamflett, not goody or widow.
Stephen Pamflett was bur. 2 June 1686 (Par. Reg.)
Ann Pamflett, his widow, was bur. 18 Aug 1697 (Par. Reg.)
Her burial is recorded in Reg. for Briefs as ‘Mrs Pamflett of the Queens Arms.’
Pond Armanel. In 1704, p. 344 we have ‘Armanel Pond with her Apprentice’, Daughter of Abraham Pond I.
Widows always carried on after the death of their husbands. They often do so now; but the remarkable thing is the way in which women, especially widows, took over an inn when there has been trace of a man of the same name whom they followed.
Perkins and Stevens must have had the Five Bells.
Yeomans Stephen has not been mentioned since 1688. There are frequent references to Goody Yeomans after 1702, and two to Stepehen Yeoman’s wife; so it is probable that it is the same inn from 1702 to 1709, and indeed from 1688.
Pond family. The history of this family is briefly outlined on p. 7 of this M.S.
Perkins widow (no trace of a Mr Perkins as an innholder) from 1697 to 1707.
